The innovative Firearms Series recreates famous and popular small arms in an exciting new 1/3 scale. This large scale offers the best in terms of accuracy, detail and convenient size for display and storage. It also allows delicate parts separation within kits to maximize detail. The inaugural item in the 1/3 Firearms Series is a G17 pistol.
The G17 has been adopted by numerous military and police forces around the world. It’s a 9mm semi-automatic pistol designed to fire NATO-standard 9x19mm Parabellum cartridges fed from a standard 17-round box magazine. Dimensions of the G17 are: 186mm long, a 114mm-long barrel, and a weight of 625g unloaded. Dragon’s new kit features TWO complete G17 pistols and one 1/3 scale gun case. Thanks to sophisticated engineering and accurate technical tolerances, the replica gun is easily assembled and it realistically mimics the real thing. Again it is a 1/3 scale miniature of a G17, but this time it features an important accessory – a tactical flashlight. The collector’s piece builds upon the amazing realism of Dragon’s earlier G17. The original semi-automatic weapon fires NATO-standard 9x19mm Parabellum cartridges. The G17 was a pioneering pistol design, and it has proved a huge success with more than 50 military and police forces around the world. It weighs 625g, which is a lot heavier than Dragon’s conveniently sized model that is ideal for display, and which loses nothing in accuracy and lifelikeness.
As with the earlier G17 release, there are two complete pistol miniatures contained in the full-scale gun case. The G17 pistol was the opening offering in Dragon’s groundbreaking 1/3 Firearms Series, and it has been quickly followed by a much larger weapon. The second item in the series is an M14 rifle. Official nomenclature is United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62mm, M14, with this 5.2kg and 1.181m-long weapon being produced from 1959-64. The 7.62x51mm M14 was the last ‘battle rifle’ (a weapon that fires full-power rifle ammunition), and it was eventually superseded by the M16 assault rifle. Interestingly, the success of the design is seen in the fact that M14s are still being used as specialist sniper rifles by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq even today!
The M14 can trace its lineage back to the M1 Garand, and it served well enough in Vietnam, even though its bulk and weight proved unwieldy in the thick jungle foliage. It was the mainstay infantry weapon in Vietnam until the M16 began appearing in 1966. Dragon’s 1/3 scale kit offers a complete M14 rifle that accurately resembles the real thing. Its realism is illustrated in working features like a detachable 20-round box magazine, simulated bolt action, and even a trigger that has movement like that of the original.
